England and Arsenal legend Ian Wright has put his boots back on and returned to the famed turf at Wembley Stadium.
The former England and Arsenal striker celebrated hitting 1 million followers on Twitter by giving his fans a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join him for #OneMoreGame at Wembley Stadium, courtesy of Vauxhall, the England team sponsor.
Challenging Wright was Soccer AM’s Tubes who, after captaining England in a Scotland Fan v. England Fan game last year, came out victorious. Team Wright included ex-Chelsea and Leeds United stopper Michael Duberry and were managed by England Women’s defender Alex Scott.
The game was officiated by Mark Halsey and saw John Healy and footballer turned boxer Leon McKenzie fire Team Wrighty into a 2-0 lead, before ex-England manager Graham Taylor’s Team Tube, which included Romford Pele Ray Parlour and defensive master Martin Keown fought back through John Healy and Simon Dolman to level at 2-2.
Fittingly it was Wright himself who scored a typical winner to settle the game. The Arsenal legend wore the celebrated number 8 jersey. He said: “I’ve watched all the FA Cup Finals from 1970 up to the present day, and Wembley is such a special stadium. I never dreamed that I would actually get to play and score there.”
“The response from the fans to #OneMoreGame has been unbelievable and it is a day I will never forget. I hope that this day will live long in the memory of everyone who took part and I’d like to thank Vauxhall for all their help in making it happen.”
