CHAMPIONS-ELECT Stepney FC have been crowned the 2018 BFA Summer Vets League winners for 2018. Shofiqul Islam’s men romped home to the title after a scintillating 5-0 victory over close rivals Shadwell at Stepney Green Park.
The final day blitz of the 2016 and 2017 League champions means invincible Stepney have written another astonishing chapter in their illustrious history by going through the whole campaign unbeaten.
With the league wrapped up, Stepney showed little mercy and went full throttle to annihilate Shadwell with the league’s top marksman, Mufi Uddin, helping himself to a hat trick. Tharik Hussain struck a 30 yard pile-driver before captain Zaheer Saleh applied the icing on the cake with an exquisite long distance chip.
Stepney finish the season 15 points ahead of second placed SYA, courtesy of winning nine games and drawing one. East One finish bottom of the league with eight points.
BFA officials Jamal Hussain and Shakil Rahman were in attendance to hand over the champions trophy to skipper Saleh.
Stepney manager Shofiqul Islam commented, “To wrap up the league – in this competitive league – is no mean feat, but the manner in which we have done it is really special. Well done to everyone at Stepney FC.”
Aroz Miah, CEO of the Sporting Foundation, added, “Stepney FC is a name synonymous with winning. The old guard are still producing moments of magic and to win the league unbeaten is a huge achievement.”
Both teams will meet in the vets cup final, with the date to be scheduled soon.
