It’s cheaper to get to Stratford

A total of eight east London Tube and/or DLR stations have been rezoned – in a move which will make it cheaper to travel to destinations in Newham.

The affected stations are: Stratford, West Ham, Stratford High Street, Stratford International DLR station, West Ham, Canning Town, Star Lane and Abbey Road.

These stations used to be in Zone 3, but now they will become border Tube stations, known as “zone 2/3”. This means that a journey from a Zone 2 station (such as most of the Tube stations in Tower Hamlets, for example) to one of the re-zoned stations is a one zone journey, which will reduce the cost of the journey considerably. The change also means that people travelling from further out east into Newham will remain the same: someone travelling from zone 4, 5 or 6 into Stratford will still only be charged for a journey to zone 3.

Robin Wales, mayor of Newham, was thrilled that the change has finally been implemented. He said, “We’ve been campaigning for this for some time. The truth is London’s moving eastwards… and it’s sensible to reduce the cost of travel. It’s going to encourage people to come to Stratford, West Ham and Canning Town, which will be great.”

The change should certainly help Sir Robin with his plans to gentrify Newham, as it will now be even easier to market new properties built for sale.

Among other changes announced at the same time is confirmation that from 11th January travellers will be able to use an Oyster or contactless card for journeys between London and Gatwick Airport on Southern, Gatwick Express and Thameslink services.
