HE FLEW INTO a jealous rage and broke into his former partner’s home – attacking her and her new partner, inflicting horrendous and life changing injuries. Being jealous was no excuse – and now he’s starting a long jail sentence.
Umit Hayta, 39, of Second Avenue, Dagenham, was with his wife for 15 years, but the marriage ended when she filed for divorce in 2019. On 21st February, he went to her home in Homerton. She had been seeing a new man, 24, for around two months and he was in her home when Hayta came round.
Hayta was out of control from the start. The first sign that he was at the property came when his ex-wife heard a loud banging at the front door – and just knew it was him. She ran to the front door and tried to hold it closed, but Hayta kicked it down – and immediately began attacking the new man. His ex-wife shouted at their two young children to run out of the house, and they ran round to a neighbour’s house. The ex-wife followed them.
The man also managed to flee the home. He worked at a nearby shop, and he went there and asked a colleague to help him. He told the colleague to shut the shop door, stating, “he’s going to kill me.” The colleague rang 999, but then realised just how seriously injured the man was and drove him straight to an East London hospital.
At hospital, medics found that the victim had 18 stab wounds, a number of which could have been fatal, and took him into surgery. He also had a bleed on the brain, which doctors said was life-threatening. Doctors said that the victim may well have died if he had not received such quick medical treatment.
The male victim has been left with life-changing injuries which will require medical treatment for his neurological and emotional injuries for years to come. Hayta’s ex partner was injured as she tried to stop Hayta attacking her. She sustained lacerations on her back and leg and these needed stitches.
Hayta also ran away from his ex-wife’s home. He drove back to his own home, where he phoned police. He game them his name and told them that he had stabbed someone. Police went to his home, where they found blood stained clothing. They arrested him and took him to an East London police station, where he refused to answer any questions.
Hayta was charged two days later with attempted murder as well as two counts of Governing Body Harm with Intent. He appeared at the Old Bailey on 12th June and pleaded guilty to two counts of Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent. He returned to the court at the end of last month and was sentenced to 18 years in prison with an extended licence of three years.
The Court heard a victim impact statement written by the victim’s cousin, who explained that after the surgery the victim had been in a coma. Doctors had feared he may not come round from the coma, but luckily he did. However, the man whom his cousin described as kind, genuine and loved by his family and friends did not make a full recovery.
His cousin’s statement went on to say, “Every day, I am grateful that he is alive and with us, but unfortunately the new him is not the same person any more. He has severe behavioural and cognitive difficulties and a diminished mental capacity. He is not able to function like an ordinary person anymore.
“He has spent his months bed bound in hospital and is currently still in a brain injury rehabilitation centre being cared for. A very fit and healthy young man has been left injured and scarred for life. His entire life has changed and his hopes and ambitions are dead. His old self is dead. While we are eternally grateful that he is alive, this situation has left our entire family scarred and distraught for a lifetime. He will never be like his old self again.”
Detective Constable Rajkumar Anton Arulnayagam, the investigating officer from Central East’s Safeguarding unit, said: “Hayta carried out a sustained, brutal attack on an innocent man simply because he was spending time with his ex-partner. Had Hayta’s victim not attended hospital when he did, he surely would have died from his injuries. However, his life has been changed forever. Hayta’s ex-partner also received some nasty injuries as she desperately tried to intervene and stop Hayta’s rampage.
“This was a terrifying ordeal for the victims and the two young children who were in the house at the time. The overwhelming evidence we had against Hayta left him with no option but to plead guilty, preventing his victims from the ordeal of having to re-live that evening by going to trial. I hope today’s sentencing gives them a small measure of comfort and closure and sends a clear message that those who commit violence will be brought to justice.”
