A DISPUTE over a smoke alarm in a block of flats in Norbiton Road, E14, escalated – and now one of the residents involved is starting a two year jail sentence.
Trouble began on 23rd July last year. A smoke alarm was triggered in a flat where Omar Jaiteh, 34, was living. The Fire Brigade were called out. After they left, Jaiteh became agitated. He accused a neighbour, a man in his 20s, of calling the emergency services.
Jaiteh had a knife: he threatened to stab his neighbour and moved towards him. The victim ran away and reached the safety of his own flat, from where he called the police. The police attended and were able to arrest Jaiteh and recover the knife.
Jaiteh was found guilty of threatening a person in a public place with a knife and of threatening behaviour at a hearing at Snaresbook Crown Court on 25th April. He returned to the court earlier this month and was sentenced to two years in prison.
Detective Sergeant Tomasz Patzer of Tower Hamlets CID said:, “What started out as a fairly trivial incident ended with Omar Jaiteh arming himself with a knife and threatening his neighbour. Why he chose that course of action is unclear. However, what is clear is that carrying a knife and threatening harm to others are not acceptable and Jaiteh has rightly been jailed for this.”
