Listeria found in turkey pastrami

LISTERIA monocytogenes is a nasty bacterium. It causes the usual symptoms of food poisoning: vomiting, diarrhoea, high temperature, aches, etc. Its special powers, though, make it one of the most dangerous of the bacteria that cause food poisoning.

We stop the growth of bacteria by putting our food in the fridge. Listeria can grow even when it is refrigerated. Modern hygiene practices mean that listeria is not common, but it is most commonly found in cold “deli” meats, raw milk and soft cheeses.

Listeria is also a powerful bacterium and vulnerable people – the young, the elderly, and pregnant women. That is why pregnant women are advised during their ante-natal care not to eat soft cheeses.

Gilbert’s have found listeria monocytogenes in its turkey breast. The product involved comes in a pack size of 142g which shows a product code of CK016 CK027 and a use by date of 9th April 2026.

Anyone who has this product is advised not to eat it but to take it back to the shop where you bought it, where you should receive a full refund.
