London Bridge: third attacker named

THE THIRD London Bridge attacker has been named. He is believed to be 22 year old Youssef Zaghba, an Italian national, of Moroccan descent who was living in East London. Formal identification is awaited.

Zaghba was named in the Italian media early today, 4th June. Although the Metropolitan Police had asked the UK media not to speculate on the identity of the attackers before the police were ready to release their names – in order not to compromise police investigations – British newspapers and broadcasters began reporting what the Italian media had been saying.

The Met’s Counter Terrorism Command then confirmed the suspect’s likely identity later this morning. They also announced that he was not a police or MI5 subject of interest before the attack. However, there have been media reports that Zaghba had been arrested in Italy in the middle of an attempt to fly to Syria – and that the British authorities had been informed.

The news of the third attacker’s identity came after the Counter Terrorism Command carried out two further raids in East London.
The first was at 1.30am this morning, on an address in Ilford. The premises were searched, but no one was arrested.
The second was in Barking, where a 27 year old man was arrested under the Terrorism Act just after 8am.

A statement from 130 imams and religious leaders, including the East London Mosque, has confirmed that they will not perform prayers for the deceased attackers. They say, “we will not perform the traditional Islamic funeral prayer over the perpetrators and we also urge fellow imams and religious authorities to withdraw such a privilege. This is because such indefensible actions are completely at odds with the lofty teachings of Islam.”
