NEW YEAR resolutions to make 2026 your year to “be well” will be easier to keep in Tower Hamlets with the Council’s New Year’s membership offers. It starts with “4 months for the price of 3” on standard membership.
There’s also a free treatment when you sign up for spa membership, a discount on junior membership and a prize draw for new members. Offers are available until 31st January – so get signing up now!
This month the Council has also opened new saunas at Whitechapel Sports Centre, which had been closed for as long as most users can remember. The new facility comes after the Council refurbished the spa at York Hall. These improvements became possible after the Council took over running of the borough’s leisure centres from private contractors and invested in funds set aside to improve the health of Tower Hamlets residents.
The spa was opened days after a BBC Radio 4 programme explored the health benefits of taking a sauna. Remember to ease yourself into sauna treatments. Anyone with pre-existing health conditions is advised to check with their GP before taking a sauna, and it is not suitable for those who are pregnant.
Why is the Council running a spa? Well – why not? There are many top-end gyms and hotels with spas across the borough, where well-heeled residents can sweat and sluice. But Tower Hamlets Council believes that everyone should have access to this experience.
“This £80,000 investment at Whitechapel Sports Centre is about more than new saunas – it’s about removing barriers to health and wellbeing and ensuring residents have access to high-quality, affordable facilities close to home,” said Cllr Kamrul Hussain, Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation, as he cut the ribbon at the door to the spas in Whitechapel Sports Centre.
“By combining these upgrades with our New Year offers, we’re making it easier for people to take that first step – whether that means improving physical health, supporting mental wellbeing, or simply finding time for themselves.
There you are. Dust off that New Year resolution about getting fit in 2026 – and get joining!
