Figures released by the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) show Tower Hamlets delivered the highest number of affordable homes in the country. Between 2010/11 and 2014/15 – essentially the period of Mayor Lutfur Rahman’s Administration – Tower Hamlets has seen 5,590 affordable homes delivered.
Earlier this year, the council secured £24.8 million from the government’s New Homes Bonus. This was recognition from the Government of the work the Council has been undertaking to build the housing stock in the borough. There are also a number of other regeneration projects planned by Mayor Lutfur Rahman which are underway or about to start and which will deliver affordable housing, including Blackwall Reach, the Whitechapel Vision and London Dock.
John Biggs acknowledged how good the figures were, saying, “These figures show that the council has been working hard to deliver affordable homes to our residents.” In what we can only assume is an oversight, he omitted to give any credit to Mayor Lutfur Rahman or to his Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration, Cllr Rabina Khan.
