UNDERDOGS NOBIGANJ FC have been crowned the Greater Sylhet Upazila Cup Champions for 2018 – after defying all odds to lift Britain’s number one football trophy.
Nobiganj beat four time finalists Osmaninagar in a dramatic penalty shootout to add their name to the prestigious list of teams to have lifted the Cup.
Managers Habib Ullah and Aminul Hussain commented, “This is a tremendous achievement by our team. We may not have been the most glamorous side, but we were hungry and persevered in every game. Every squad member was simply tremendous. Thank you to Sonali Othith for organising such a memorable day.”
To rapturous applause Sporting Bengal Manager Imrul Gazi lifted the prestigious trophy and was subsequently named man of the match.
He added, “This is a fairytale story for our team. If truth be told nobody gave us a chance today, but our core and inner belief, our strength and unity – and a bit of good fortune – all played a huge part in our success today. This is a magical moment for us all.”
Sonali Othith Chair Jamal Uddin concluded, “Despite the constant rain the weather failed to dampen the collective moods of the competitors. We were hugely impressed with the conduct and spirit of each camp towards one another. Congratulations, Nobiganj, on an amazing win.”
