Emdad Rahman: The Jack Petchey Awards were presented at a ceremony held at York Hall. The Awards highlight the contributions of young people and the extra steps that they take to help and support their fellow citizens and the community at large.
Rahat Hussain, a 16 year old Sir John Cass pupil, was recognised for his outstanding achievements at school and in his selfless work in the community. Rahat received an award, certificate and £200 to spend on resources for his school.
His proud parents – his mother Shazeda, who works at Ben Jonson Primary School, and his father Didhar – attended the award ceremony.
Rahat said: “I’m so happy to be among people who have achieved so well and would like to thank the Jack Petchey Foundation for supporting us. A lot of young people don’t always get good publicity so it’s great that we are told that we are doing things right.”
His father Didhar added: “We are so pleased for Rahat. He is a very level headed young man, popular, mature, caring and always looking to help others. He has made us so proud today.”
Established in 1999, The Jack Petchey Foundation gives grants to programmes and projects that benefit young people aged 11-25. The Foundation exists to raise the aspirations of young people, to help them take advantage of opportunities and play a full part in society. Jack Petchey is one of the UK’s most successful businessmen. Born in East London in July 1925, Jack came from a working class background with very few advantages. From an early age he showed the entrepreneurial skills that have aided his success.
