Red Crescent warns Tehran air is dangerous

“DON’T BREATHE the air!” seems to be the latest safety warning in Teheran. It comes as the USA and Israel move from bombing military targets to destroying infrastructure.

An Israeli strike on a depot in Tehran on Saturday ignited a gas pipe: flames ran along the streets and sewers. The pipes could be heard exploding beneath the streets, and they sent huge fireballs up into the night sky.

Thick, dense smoke from various blasts on Saturday hung over Iran’s capital city the following morning – turning day into night. The smoke was full of soot and vaporised oil. On Sunday morning, it was raining black rain.

This was the moment that the Iranian Red Crescent put out urgent warnings to residents, advising them to stay indoors – as the air outside was “unbreathable”.

Gas pipes running under the roads were on fire.

The destruction of the infrastructure will leave Iran with huge problems in the years to come – just like Gaza. Trump has threatened to build luxury holiday resorts on top of the rubble of Gaza. Will he do the same to Iran? In the meantime, it seems no one has thought of the long-term consequences of polluting the air that ordinary Iranians breathe.
