Shop fire closes roads in Chingford

FIRE BROKE out today, 14th March, in a shop in Hall Lane Chingford, and quickly spread to a flat above. Ten fire engines brougt some 70 firefighters to the scene, and the fire was quickly brought under control.

The ground floor shop, which was at the end of a short terrace of shops, was damaged by the fire. The greatest damage happened to the flat above, with some of the roof collapsing.

No one was injured by the fire. A woman and a child escaped the building just before the Fire Brigade arrived. They were taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service.

The fire brigade received a report about the fire at 11.35am. Crews from Walthamstow, Chingford, Tottenham attended and were soon joined by crews from other nearby stations. The fire was declared “under control” just over two hours after the first call, at 13.49hrs.

Roads in the area remained closed for some hours after the incident. Shops near the burning unit had to close – including a branch of Sainsbury’s. Buses had to be diverted. The cause of the fire will be investigated by the Fire Brigade’s Fire Investigation Unit.
