Participants from the SPLASH Youth Leadership programme have been spending their free time actively helping and engaging with older community residents. Small teams of young people have been visiting three different Old Peoples’ Residential Homes (Sonali Gardens, Duncan Court and Aspen Court) in Tower Hamlets. The dedicated youngsters have chatted to residents, played bingo, served tea, biscuits, rice and curry and enjoyed forming friendships.
Youth leader Amrana Begum said: “Young people often get bad press and these groups have shown what it’s really like in our community. The festive season is difficult for a lot of people and it’s been so rewarding to have been able to form lasting friendships with our elderly residents. They sacrificed so much for us all and I’m really glad our teams have been able to serve them in this way.
“It’s been so memorable and I really recommend that everyone takes inspiration from these great examples to come together and look out for each other. It’s what our community is about.”
