If you’re in the Liverpool Street area over the weekend this summer, you’ll be within reach of a truly traditional US experience. Down at the Old Bengal Bar, the former 18th century East India Company warehouse near Liverpool Street, there will be a celebration of “Sweet America” between 7th and 29th August: swing dancing – fuelled by traditional Phily Cheesesteak sandwiches.
The dancing will be delivered by Swing Patrol, whose professional teachers will be on hand to show revellers the moves every Friday and Saturday, from 6 to 8pm. There will be vintage swing music as you hit the dance floor or watch the performances and competitions.
The Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches will be devoured by you, the dancers – but they will be provided by The Liberty Cheesesteak Company, London’s first and only producer of authentic Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches. Melt-in-your-mouth rib-eye steak with sautéed onions and three different cheeses to choose from will be served on an Italian soft roll in Old Bengal Bar’s surf-themed terrace, decorated for the occasion to bring on the perfect Californian Dreaming vibe.
The US extravaganza will be rounded off with a series of US cocktails inspired by swing moves such as Swing Out, Texas Tommie, Doll Drop, Apple Jacks and Screamer.
•The Old Bengal Bar is at 16A New Street, EC2M 4TR.
