The Sylhet District over 50s legends select began preparations for the forthcoming Sonali Othith (Golden Past) Sylhet District Cup by taking part in their first training session at Mabley Green, Hackney. The squad took part in a two hour session which included stretching, a 90 minute game, tactical discussions and spot kick practice.
Despite their maturity, the golden oldies showed their class throughout, albeit at a slower place. The veterans played a pressing game, showing great composure on the ball and tactical awareness – and there were some clinical strikes to boot.
Team Manager Emdad Rahman said, “I have been mightily impressed with the levels of these veterans tonight. The banter is great and this is a united squad. Myself and Abdul Kahar (Assistant Manager) are encouraging the squad to have fun, but there is no doubting the competitive elements. We will work on match sharpness in the coming weeks to ensure the squad is ready.”
Assistant Manager Abdul Kahar added, “It’s been great fun tonight. These are players we both grew up watching and it is an honour managing them now. The vets football scene is well and truly alive and I’m chuffed that we still have people playing football at this age. It’s a great example for other communities to follow.”
•The inaugural UK sylhet District Cup takes place at Mabley Green Astro on 7th November 2016.
