TRAGIC NEWS came out just before 7pm this evening, 27th July, as reports came in that a toddler had fallen from a high rise flat. The condition of the poor child is not known.
•STORY UPDATE: Unconfirmed reports circulating on local social media suggest that the toddler, a three year old boy, has died of his injuries. These reports were later denied.
The child appears to have fallen from the distinctive orange and turquoise block on the corner of Chrisp Street and East India Dock Road (the A13) – opposite Newby Place Health Centre. It is not known whether medics from the Centre were able to help the child.
Traffic stopped to leave a space around the injured child and members of the public stood transfixed to watch. The incident occurred very close to the site where a crane collapsed on local homes just weeks ago, killing one elderly resident.
The London Ambulance Service and Air Ambulance attended and administered treatment before taking the child to hospital. Some reports have questioned why the child was taken to hospital by road rather than by the helicopter. However, the nearest hospital is not far and a road journey would not have been much, if any, slower than a helicopter journey – particularly if you take into account the time needed to secure a patient in the helicopter. The Air Ambulance is often used to get trained trauma medics out to an incident quickly, rather than ferry the patient back to hospital.
●Police also attended and it is understood that road closures remained in place after medics had left the scene. Police have asked for any witnesses to the incident to contact them via 101 and quote reference CAD 6419/27 July.
