Triathlon organiser faces fine over pensioner killed by racing cyclist

Emdad Rahman: The organisers of the London Triathlon are facing a massive fine after a pensioner was killed while crossing the track.

A pedalling cyclist crashed into 67 year old Alhaj Jain Ullah as he was walking on a supervised crossing point on the highway, Wapping.

Snaresbrook Crown Court was told that stroke victim Mr Ullah, who relied on the use of a walking stick to aid him, was thrown into the air and fell several yards away from where the incident occurred.

Mr Ullah was involved in the fatal collision on 2nd August 2009 and was transferred to the Royal London Hospital, where he died five days later.

IMG UK has admitted breaching health and safety regulations and is due to be sentenced.

Mr Ullah’s son is Tower Hamlets Labour group Councillor Abdal Ullah. He said: “A sincere apology has not been provided and even IMG’s counsel, Adrian Darbishire, articulated empathy only when impelled to do so.”

Councillor Ullah added: “The judge commented before their barrister said anything, and this shows how much remorse there is.”
