A CRANE collapsed onto a house in Crewe, Cheshire – leaving two men dead and three people in hospital. The incident occurred at approximately 4.30pm as the crane was working on a new housing estate near the Bombardier manufacturing site.
There are reports that the crane was lifting another crane as it toppled over. It is understood that the two men who died were found underneath the fallen crane.
The three people in hospital include the crane river, who was freed from the crane and airlifted to hospital. The nature of his injuries and his condition have not been disclosed. Also taken to hospital were a parent and child who were in the house onto which the crane collapsed. It is believed that they are less seriously injured and were taken to hospital as a precaution.
Road closures were put in place on Dunwoody Way, a major route, as emergency services dealt with the incident, with several fire crews attending as well as ambulances.
The Health and Safety Executive has been informed, as is required with an industrial accident. Locals will be hoping that the accident did not happen as a result of cost cutting on the part of those in charge of the crane and the site.
