Two hurt on DLR after “bang” like explosion

A LOUND “BANG” was heard on a Docklands Light Railway (DLR) train just after 11am this morning, 19th February. Worried commuters thought it sounded like a bomb had gone off and rushed to evacuate the train at Pontoon Dock station.

The DLR has announced that the noise was in fact an electrical fault on the track, which set off a small fire, causing a release of smoke. In the rush out of the train, two people were trampled by the crowd and suffered minor injuries.

The company apologised to travellers for the “distressing incident” and is now investigating the cause of the explosion. Police were quickly on the scene.

The DLR remains closed between Canning Town and Woolwich Arsenal. This part of the line includes the DLR stop for London City Airport, which was advising passengers to use the TfL journey planner to find alternative routes. It also suggested travellers take to the 474 bus from Canning Town.

This is the second time would-be air travellers have had their journey disrupted in recent days – the first coming when an unexploded World War II bomb was found in the dock near the airport.
