A crowdfunding campaign has begun for Weavers Kids Cafe, an enterprising community project in the north west of the borough. The Café is trying to get as many different people as possible to pledge what they can before Sunday night. The more people pledge to support the cause, the more chance the project has of winning up to £20,000 from the Mayor of London’s Crowdfunding Campaign.
The not-for-profit cafe teaches kids to cook and sell affordable healthier meals, with costs funded by the Community Pizzeria. The Pizzeria helps sustain Weavers Adventure Playground, which has been running for over 40 years using alternative methods of learning, engaging young people (and their families) in cross-age group active play, fire building, cooking, creativity and self-governed peer learning.
Weavers Adventure Playground provides an exciting and stimulating environment for children and young people to play, learn grow and develop. Playing and taking risks are important parts of growing up – they are how children and young people learn about themselves and the world around them.
The Kids Cafe project has set up cooking sessions for kids and their families that then generate affordable healthier meals for all those who attend Weavers. The youngsters establish their own menus and budgets and are supported to become cooking entrepreneurs for their community.
Tower Hamlets has the fifth highest level of child obesity in the country, with 25% of 10-11 year olds classified as obese. Bethnal Green has the highest national rate of child poverty (49%).
Weavers Kids Cafe offers a grassroots ways of tackling these issues by providing spaces where affordable healthier food and exercise is readily available for all. Activities empower young people and families to learn to provide healthier alternatives for their whole community, not just themselves.
