“WE WANT to deliver an excellent Youth Service…” said Deputy Mayor Cllr Maium Talukar, “so we are looking for some excellent youth workers!”
As Cabinet Member for Education, Youth and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Talukdar oversees the Youth Service and its development into that stellar service that Executive Mayor Lutfur Rahman’s Administration wants to see. The first step was to establish a youth centre in every ward, bringing youth services close to the young people had used them. That task is nearly completed.
The next step is to increase the activities going on in all the centres. “There’s already lots going on,” explained Cllr Talukdar, “but there’s so much more we want to do. That’s why we are now having a major recruitment of youth workers, to develop what we are doing.”
Cllr Talukdar stressed that Young Tower Hamlets is all about diversity. “We know we have a very diverse young population in Tower Hamlets,” he explained, “and we want to have something on offer to all of them, to help them reaach their full potential. We want to offer a place where they can practice what they are good at – whether it’s football or music – but also to try something they haven’t tried before – such as podcasting or completing their maths homework.”
Young Tower Hamlets has special strands of activity for young people who have learning disabilities or special responsibilities, such as caring for a family member. “To be responsive to such a diverse range of needs, the Council neneds to recruit a diverse workforce,” said the Deputy Mayor. “So I encourage everyone who is interested in one of our vacancies to apply.”
