THE MAN who raped and murdered six year old Zainab Ansari in Pakistan and left her body on a rubbish dump has been sentenced to death by a Pakistani court. He had kidnapped the little girl from her aunt’s house.
Imran Ali was given four death sentences after confessing to the crime and being formally convicted. The death sentences were handed down in respect of kidnapping, rape, murder and an act of terrorism, and sodomy. Ali was also fined 3.2 million rupee (£20,000).
In addition to the confession, the court acted on the basis of forensic evidence, including DNA analysis and polygraph (“lie detector”) tests, and a large amount of evidence from over 30 witnesses.
The little girl’s body was found in Kasur, a city south of Lahore, in the Punjab, on 9th January. The case became notorious in Pakistan – not only for the brutality of the crime, but also because of apparent police indifference, which triggered demonstrations and even riots.
Suggestions are now circulating that Ali may have committed other assaults and murders in the area, with local reports suggesting that he had also confessed to raping and murdering at least six other young girls.
