Fatal crash in Dagenham: police seek information

ON THURSDAY, 30th March at approximately 8.30pm, a motor scooter collided with a pedestrian in Green Lanes, Dagenham, near the junction with Grafton Lane. The London Ambulance Service attended and the pedestrian, a 50 year old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

A young man was found at the scene and was taken to an East London hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.  He is believed to be 17 years of age, and it is thought that he was a pillion passenger on the scooter.

There is confusion over what happened to the driver of the scooter. The police and ambulance service did not find him at the scene of the accident. They believe that a second scooter or moped arrived at the scene of the accident and took the driver away – as a pillion passenger on the second scooter, but this remains conjecture at the moment and cannot be confirmed. A short time after the accident, a 21 year old man arrived at an East London hospital with serious injuries.  He was admitted and remains in the hospital, in a critical condition – and police believe he may be the missing driver.

The scooter which caused the accident has now been identified as a vehicle which had been stolen from a location in Kensington & Chelsea late last year.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the accident or was in the area at this time to come forward, to help them piece together what happened.  They would also like to speak to anyone who has information about the accident or the parties involved.

Anyone who can help is asked to contact the police on 020-8597 4874.  You can also pass information to Crimestoppers on 0800-555 111, or via their website at www.crimestoppers-uk.org. Information provided to Crimestoppers will be handled confidentially and you do not even have to provide your name.
