OCTOBER IS breast cancer awareness month – bringing a range of charities and health organisations together to keep women aware of how to check for the condition and seek help if they need to.
A range of charities are engaging with the month in their own way. Estimates of how many cases in breast cancer are diagnosed in the UK or across the world vary slightly, but everyone involved agrees that the number can be reduced – by screening programmes, early detection, and research. That’s why the month will concentrate on raising awareness but also raising money.

●Breast Cancer UK is holding a range of fundraising activities to help the work it does all year round. The highlight of this month’s work is the launch of a new video to encourage women to check for breast cancer. The charity points out that “breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. But over a quarter of cases are preventable”. Read more about this work here:

●On 23rd October, Breast Cancer Now will be holding a “wear it pink” day. It’s usually one of the UK’s biggest fundraising days of the year, and the charity is hoping for a good performance this year. As it points out, we don’t know what the world will look like in the future, but “we know that breast cancer doesn’t stop for anything.” The charity is asking people to wear pink – at work, at school, or in the community – and to obtain sponsorship or hold other fundraising events (many involving cake) and competitions.
