A whole new Angol for Orient

THERE’S ANOTHER new signing down at the Os – where Lee Angol has come on board for the new season. Angol transferred from Shrewsbury Town and arrives in East London with a two year contract.

Angol began his playing career at Spurs, where he was an apprentice – and which is where he came to the attention of Orient’s current interim Head Coach, Ross Embleton. Angol began playing in earnest seven years ago at Wycombe Wanderers. Loans to Hendon, Maidenhead United and Boreham Wood saw him build up his experience – and his goal tally.

After a brief stint at Luton, Angol returned to Boreham Wood – where he settled down to the precision task of finding the back of the net. He was the National League South’s top scorer that season, with 25 goals coming from his 39 appearances. With another eight goals coming from non-League appearances, he ended his stint as Boreham Wood’s Player of the Season – winning the Young Player of the Year at the National Game Awards.

After that, Angol moved up to League One play. A three year contract with Peterborough United began promisingly, with two goals in his first game, against Oldham Athletic. He notched up a respectable eleven goals in 38 appearances.

Sadly, the fairy tale faltered. Angol fractured his ankle in a pre-season match before the 2016/17 season. He recovered, but in March 2017 he was loaned to Lincoln City. A season in League Two followed, with a promising run at Mansfield Town, after which Angol got the Shrewsbury Town gig.

Director of Football Martin Ling revealed the work that went into the signing. “We’ve been monitoring Lee for the last six months,” he said. “He was one of the players we had on the target list in January when we thought there was a chance we would lose one of our strikers. He’s someone we’ve done all the due diligence on, he’s got a great attitude and is a good player and we’re pleased to have him on board.”

Angol also seems to be relishing the move. “I feel quite inspired to be joining the Club,” he said. “Everyone knows what Leyton Orient did last year, you can see what trajectory they are on, everyone knows how big of a club Leyton Orient are and they are on a mission to get back where they were so I’m excited.”
