Barking youngster Yahya wins national recognition

Emdad Rahman

A BARKING & DAGENHAM teenager has been recognised for his contribution to his community and country with a National Citizen Service (NCS) Award.

Sixteen year old Yahya Rahman took part in the four week NCS scheme aimed at building confidence and self belief to enable youngsters to deal with challenges in life. Activities included living away from home, developing skills and meeting new people.

The programme is delivered by a series of charities, college consortia and Voluntary, Community, Social Enterprise (VCSE) and private sector partnerships across England.

Yahya took part in a team bonding six hour hike in Swindon, stayed at the University of East London, visited homeless shelters and made speeches on community matters to his peers.

A certificate signed by Theresa May was presented to Yahya during a ceremony at the Dominion Centre in Wood Green.

Speaking about his achievement Yahya said, “I’m really happy. I really benefitted because this experience has really improved my confidence and presentation. The work we did with homeless citizens has really made me proud.”
