MOST COMMUNITY GROUPS in Tower Hamlets – and beyond – rely heavily on volunteers to carry out some or all of their functions. The Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park are no exception, and at the moment they are looking for volunteers to work on a number of projects.
•The Friends are looking for a volunteer who can spend a couple of hours a week boosting their digital communications. They are looking for someone with experience in managing social media outlets for a business or charity – specifically using Mailchimp for e-newsletters and WordPress websites. The volunteer should live in the area – and have a passion for nature! To apply for the role email your CV to the address below.
•Volunteers with architecture, garden design or research skills are being sought to help the Friends improve the memorial and the garden of remembrance commemorating civilians who died in Poplar during World War II. It’s a timely project, as the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II is very near. The memorial was erected in 1952 to commemorate the 190 Poplar civilians who were killed in the first few months of the Blitz. It was located in a garden of remembrance which was lost in the 1970s, as the nature of the Cemetery Park was changed. The Friends would like to restore the memorial and the Garden – but also to expand the number of locals who lost their lives during World War II and are remembered by the memorial. Work is already being carried out by a team of knowledgeable heritage volunteers – but more help is needed.

•Donations are being sought to restore the Burdick family monument, which was recently seriously damaged by a falling tree. The Friends are aiming to raise £5,000 for the necessary work. They have already raised a quarter of the necessary sum and now welcome donations, large or small. You can donate online here:
