Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams of the Homicide and Major Crime Command has today made a specific appeal to the public to come forward with information about a large, light coloured 4×4 type vehicle which was seen leaving the area of the shooting immediately after it happened. He also asked for any photos or videos of the incident and its aftermath which members of the public had taken.
DCI Whellams said, “We are working tirelessly to work through the evidence and piece together the events which led to Corey’s murder. I am specifically appealing for information about a large, light coloured 4 x 4 type vehicle that was seen leaving the scene immediately after the shooting. Did you see this vehicle in and around the area of Moore Walk shortly after 3pm on Monday, 4 September? If you did, please contact the incident room – any information could prove to be vital to progressing this investigation.
“I would also ask any members of the public who have footage or images of the incident or the events surrounding the incident to retain this footage and contact police.”
NEWHAM POLICE have launched a murder investigation after a Newham family had to take the heartbreaking decision to turn off the life support system which was sustaining a 14 year old boy.
Corey Junior Davis – known to his friends as “CJ” – was an innocent schoolboy from Forest Gate who had no involvement with gangs himself. He was an energetic and, by all accounts, likeable school pupil who was always trying to get a laugh out of people. On Monday he found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. CJ and a group of friends were just hanging out, sat out near a playground on their estate, in a spot where they often chilled out together – an easy target for the assassin they were not expecting and his shotgun.
Corey and his friend were shot at around 3pm on Monday, 4th September in Moore Walk, E7, near Forest Gate Tube station. The Lord Lister GP surgery is just by Moore Walk and staff were on the scene immediately, doing what they could to help. Police arrived quickly and the two boys were taken by ambulance to an East London Hospital.
Corey had been shot in the back of the head, and sadly he lost his fight for life at 10pm on Tuesday evening. His 17 year old friend, who has been named locally as Jamal Reid, is reported to have been shot in the leg. He remains in hospital and has potentially life changing injuries.
The shooting is thought to have been in revenge for an incident last Friday, when there was a fight in the Westfield shopping centre, during which an 18 year old youth was stabbed. The brawl was between the E6 gang from Beckton and the Woodgrange gang, who are based on Woodgrange Road, Forest Gate.
Police fear there may now be further revenge attacks in Newham and immediately after the shooting began extra police patrols in sensitive parts of the borough. Chief Superintendent Ade Adelekan, head of Newham police, authorised use of stop and search tactics to try to turn back the recent escalation of gang warfare.
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams, who is leading the investigation being conducted by the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said, “This is a very tragic incident, a teenage boy’s life has been taken in an extreme act of violence leaving his family utterly devastated. We are pursuing all lines of enquiry to catch the person responsible for Corey’s murder and are keen to hear from anyone who believes they might have information to come forward as it could prove vital to our investigation. Our thoughts are with Corey’s family at this very difficult time.”
