IF THE MAN had just driven his drugs haul down the High Street in Plaistow, maybe the police would have been none the wiser. As it was, it seems that he had been “enjoying” the goods he was taking for sale.
It was just before 9pm on 11th January when police saw a vehicle driving fast and erratically down the High Street. They recognised the vehicle: they had stopped it before, and it had sped off. On this occasion, they managed to stop the car at Northern Road, E13.
Naturally, the police asked the driver to get out of the car. At first he refused, and officers managed to take the car key out of the ignition – just in case he was planning another quick getaway. When the driver managed to get out of the car, police saw that he was unsteady on his feet – and they also realised there was a strong smell of cannabis coming out of the vehicle.
Police officers tried to search the man – but, deprived of the chance to drive off, he attempted to run away. He was not successful and was immediately arrested. Police then searched the car he had been driving – and found a large bag under the driver’s seat which contained a truly humungous quantity of what officers believe was cannabis.
Accordingly, the driver, a man aged 26, was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a Class B drug (namely cannabis) and driving whilst over the prescribed limit for drugs and alcohol. He was taken to an East London police station.
Inspector Tony McGovern of the Metropolitan Police Violent Crime Taskforce said, “The use and supply of drugs brings misery to local communities, while the danger posed to the public and police by those driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol quite simply cannot, and will not, be tolerated. Due to this arrest, a significant amount of Class A and B drugs will now not be sold on the streets of east London and a dangerous driver has been taken off the road.”
