THE ENGLAND Women’s Netball team have added to a summer of creditable performances in women’s sport at national level.
They have also turned the table on the run of losing out on medals in post-semi final playoffs – winning the bronze medal in the Women’s Netball World Cup.
Only a narrow defeat (47-45) at the hands of New Zealand, who went on to win the Cup, had kept England from the final. Beating back the disappointment, England took on South Africa just 24 hours later to decide the medal position.
The game stood at 29-22 in England’s favour at half time and the full time score was 58-42, with goals being scored by Helen Housby (ten) and Jo Harten (five).
It was a fitting end for a team which is unlikely to play together again at national level and which will in future play under a new coach, as World Cup Head Coach Tracey Neville has now retired from the post.
The team’s next long term goal is the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where England will be defending the gold medal position they reached in 2018.
