Food retailers: new allergen labelling guidance out

ALLERGIES are a serious business. People with allergens can have a serious reaction if they consume food they are allergic to. If they don’t get the right treatment promptly, they can die – and sometimes they do.

Some schools have been found to be negligent in the deaths of some pupils because they did not follow procedures designed to keep children safe. And the public does not want to see similar negligence on the part of food retailers.

All food retailers should be aware of labelling requirements, designed to help people with allergies see, at the point of purchase, whether food they want to buy could kill them. These requirements have been updated in the last couple of days.  All retailers should check the requirements which relate to their sector and consider whether they comply with the law. Yes, it’s a bit of extra work for you – but that’s better than being responsible for killing one of your customers.
