YOU’VE HEARD OF Mothers Day and Fathers Day? Now, from the USA, comes Brothers Day – a special 24 hours during which you can mark your relationship with your brother, held on 24th May.
How you mark this special relationship is up to you. You could go for a drink, share a meal – or sit and reminisce about hours spent in fraternal fights over sticky toffee, house rules or first true loves.
Here we give you a chance to add to your day with a reminder of one of the most famous scenes delivered by one of the earliest sets of Showbiz brothers. While music had Everly, Gibb and Jackon brothers, the early US film industry showcased the legendary Marx brothers.
The Marx brothers films, with their rather flickey black and white images, seem slightly dated now – but the brothers influenced much of 20th century comedy. There were six brothers in all – but one died in infancy and two others were part of the brothers’ early stage act but were largely absent from the films. It was the three remaining Marx brothers – Groucho, Chico and Harpo – who formed the core of the act.
Here are just two of them, Groucho and Chico, with the famous “sanity clause” scene from A Night at the Opera, made in 1935 and among the American Film Institute’s top twelve films of all time. Whether you have brothers of your own, are borrowing someone else’s or indulging in a bit of showbiz nostalgia – have a great brothers’ day on Friday.
