It was third time lucky for tiddlers and toddlers who went to the street party at Around Poplar Children Centre last week. This was the third party, organised by Tower Hamlets Council and the Children’s Centres Parents Forum – the most popular yet. The street-wise children had the choice of a range of hectic outdoor games and a bouncy castle and quieter creative activities with paint and plasticine – including the traditional face painting.
A number of organisations were on hand throughout the day, all providing expert advice to families who were there. The London Fire Brigade’s fire truck proved to be popular amongst the kids, allowing parents to receive tips and advice on how to stay safe at home while their youngsters were suitably enthralled. The Parent Forum provided free healthy snacks to those attending while Health Trainers gave families advice on how to make healthy meals.
Mayor of Tower Hamlets Lutfur Rahman said: “I’m pleased that we have once again been able to welcome families to our annual street party. Events such as this are a great way of bringing our community together and showcasing some of the fantastic work taking place inside our children’s centres.”
Jelena Samsonova, who attended the event, said: “This is a great event for the whole family. We also came last year and it keeps getting better. Kids love playing out on the street which is fun as well as being in a safe environment for all with so much to do.”
Parent Zinebe Maache added: “There was very good information and services on offer, focusing on leading a healthy lifestyle. It’s a great opportunity to get the community together and build on community spirit and make friends.”
Cabinet Member for Children Services Cllr Gulam Robbani said: “Children centres across the borough have been putting on a range of activities this summer encouraging children to grow and develop, and it’s great to see them having some fun with it.”
