Hungry and talented?

Young people have the chance to rustle up a three course meal from scratch thanks to a new free class aimed at 13-19-year-olds in the borough. Tower Hamlets Council’s youth arts platform ‘A’ Team Arts has received a grant to teach participants how to make tasty, affordable and nutritious food to encourage good eating habits.

The team already runs the “House of Talent” creative workshops each Thursday evening at the Brady Arts Centre in Whitechapel but found many of young people turning up at 6pm were too hungry to concentrate. Teenagers can now join the “Feed Your Talent” sessions and experiment in creating classic dishes such as pizza, jerk chicken and fish and chips, as well as smoothies to wash it all down.

Mayor of Tower Hamlets Luftur Rahman said: “This is an opportunity to equip young adults with culinary skills to allow them to become independent in the kitchen. Best of all the youngsters will be able to eat their hard work that same evening!”

Cllr Shafiqul Haque, Cabinet Member for Culture, added: “It is refreshing to have the time to create a meal using fresh ingredients. For young people looking to go away to university this will be extremely beneficial.”

Sessions start on 11th September from 4-6pm and run until 30th October. Those who wish to stay on for fashion, drama or music workshops can do so – on a full stomach. To book a place email Jessica.green@towerhamlets.gov.uk or call 020-7364 7911.
