Hackney: two murders, three arrests

WEDNESDAY, 4TH APRIL was a bad day for Hackney – with two people being murdered on the streets. The police are making progress in their investigations – and they are now appealing to the public for further help in finding suspects.

First to die was a 53 year old man, who was involved in an altercation at a bookmakers in Upper Clapton Road with another man – who left the scene. Police and the ambulance service attended, but the man died at the scene.

A 26 year old man was arrested in connection with this killing the following day. He is being interviewed by homicide detectives from the City of London Police, who have been drafted in to assist Hackney police.

Second to die was an 18 year old, who was found in Link Street, at the junction with Morning Lane, suffering from stab wounds. An off-duty paramedic provided first aid, assisted by two police officers who were seen nearby on patrol and called to help and by the ambulance service who arrived shortly afterwards. Unfortunately the victim died after a few minutes.

Two young men were arrested the following day, 5th April, in connection with this incident – two 17 year olds, who have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

On 5th April, Ch Supt Sue Williams explained why the police need help from the public, saying, “Sadly yesterday saw two people lose their lives in Hackney, a man aged 53 in Upper Clapton Road and an 18-year-old man in Link Street. Our thoughts are with the friends and families of both men at this awful time.

“I completely understand how alarmed and worried the local community will be at hearing the news this morning and we are working closely with the Homicide and Major Crime Command to solve these murders – two arrests have already been made in the Link Street incident.

“In Hackney we are working hard to prevent further violence and keep people safe – we have extra officers on the streets, both highly visible and in plain clothes carrying out a range of intelligence-led operations and patrols.

“We need to work together as a community to tackle violent crime. If you see or hear anything suspicious or have any information do not hesitate to call police on 101, via Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or in an emergency by calling 999.”
