In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Limehouse Festival, the Limehouse Community Forum (LCF) teamed up with Franklyn James, Limehouse Marina Elite and Online Inventories to hold the inaugural LIMEfest Almost 5k Fun Run – a great event for all fitness levels.

Runners took in the sights of Limehouse and the surrounding area. There was chip timing and medals were awarded to all participants.

The festival commenced straight after the run. Activities included a fun zone packed with activities for kids, police officers, a fire engine and marina police boat tours. There was a meet and greet with the Moo Canoe team and boules with the East London Petanque Association. Cyclists were given bike repair tips by Tower Hamlets Wheelers and there was a visit from Limehouse Laces, the local football team for girls. Carrot Cars once hosted the LIMEfest2016 Tug O’War competition where teams from the local area battled it out for the coveted Carrot Cup.

The LCF have delivered a number of events throughout the year including; Historical Docklands, The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebration, LIMEfest and the Pop-Up Cinema.

Lesley Balding is the Limehouse Community Forum Vice Chair and one of four organisers of LIMEfest. She said, “It’s a beautiful day and the community is out to have a good day together. It’s cost us quite a lot of money to arrange this festival and I’m proud to say that we didn’t need to go to corporate bodies and raised all the revenue locally. It’s going to be a great day.”

The race was the idea of Paul Wells. “We had the idea around Christmas time and all we wanted was people to become involved in different ways as a community. It’s been fantastic. Everybody’s taken part, enjoyed it, and got into the spirit of things. We’ve had a nice warm up, a nice warm down and to top it all off the weathers been great. Next year we hope to make it even more fun,” he said.

East London News contributor Emdad Rahman took part in the LIMEfest community run while fasting. “It’s a great run and an enjoyable route I cycle on all the time. There were plenty of smiling faces and I would definitely ask more locals to sign up next year. Lastly, a massive thank you to the volunteers. You guys make it all tick.”

The Limehouse Community Forum was set up under the Localism Act, which allow communities to take over some of the functions of the Council but without the same checks and balances which apply to public sector bodies.
