Muslim Hands distributes PPE to UK burial services

BURIAL SERVICES in East London are among those which are to receive some of the 2,000 items of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) which the UK charity Muslim Hands is distributing to Muslim Burial Councils and Funeral Services across the country.

In East London, the supplies have been given to the Brick Lane Mosque. Each PPE set includes a Hazmat suit, a visor, foot covers and a face mask.  It is calculated that this will allow a team of five people to deal with a deceased person. Various Muslim authorities have given rulings on how rites such as washing the deceased can be reduced during the Coronavirus pandemic.  Those involved with funeral services have been warned to protect themselves.

Muslim Hands believes that providing this PPE will help those who work in funeral services to protect themselves – and avoid adding to the numbers of BAME members of the community who have sadly died as a result of this illness.

Shakil Sidat, Muslims Hands Programmes Director, said, “It is imperative that Muslim Burial Councils and Funeral Services across the UK have access to the correct amenities, not only for protection against the disease, but to carry out their moral responsibility of honouring the deceased in the best way possible. We have been fortunate to have access to this scarce resource and are working hard to deliver it to those, within the funeral industry, who are in urgent need of it. We are assured that our current distributions during the month of Ramadan will bring ease to those at the forefront.”

Pervez Qureshi, Brick Lane Mosque Funeral Director, said, “We would like to thank Muslim Hands for their PPE donation which we sincerely appreciate. This will help us immensely in handling COVID-19 deceased funeral preparations and burial.”
