Police recover knife before harm done

SO MANY TIMES a story about a knife concerns the harm it has done to a victim in the course of a stabbing incident. News has now come in about a knife that was captured over the weekend: its stabbing days are done.

Just before 3pm last Saturday, neighbourhood police officers patrolling round Newham spotted a group of young men in and around Church Avenue, E12. The officers went up to the group – who ran off.

The police gave chase and managed to catch up with one of the youngsters in a back garden on Church Avenue. A knife was found nearby. The youngster, 16, was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and was taken to an East London Police Station, where he was kept in custody.

Inspector Paul Stubbs of Newham Police said, “Thanks to the quick actions of my officers, a potentially lethal weapon has been taken off the streets. As the Commissioner has spoken about this week, the Met is committed to tackling violent crime and this is just one example of the type of work officers throughout the capital carry out on a daily basis.”

It also reminds us that having police officers walking round neighbourhoods such as East London is a positive investment – and just what we have lost due to short-sighted government funding cuts in the name of austerity.
