Zubair Hussain and David Vaughan were the scorers as Sporting Bengal created a little piece of FA Cup history during their preliminary round clash against Clapton FC at Mile End Stadium.
A packed crowd crammed into the Tower Hamlets arena to witness a spectacular result for the Tower Hamlets club as Imrul Gazi’s men marched through to the next round of the Emirates FA Cup. Both goals came from set piece headers – a corner and controversial free kick.
The electric match atmosphere owed a great deal to the Clapton FC fans. Their incredible support and enthusiasm summed up everything that is good at this level of the beautiful game.
Clapton FC also said goodbye and publicly thanked Michael Walther who has decided to leave his position as First Team Manager and now joins Mike Ashford as First Team Assistant Manager at Stansted FC. The team from The Old Spotted Dog thanked Sporting Bengal for their hospitality and wished their opponents good luck in the next round. The Clapton Ultras chanted “Sporting Bengal” even though their team had lost.
The result single-handedly goes down as one of the greatest wins in the history of Sporting Bengal and the boys in blue now progress through to the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup.
Sporting Manager Imrul Gazi said, “It’s an incredible result for us. We have made Sporting Bengal history. I am incredibly proud of my lads. Thank you to Clapton FC and everyone who attended to make this such a remarkable day.”
