POLICE CONTINUE to appeal for members of the public to come forward with information about the murder of Syed Jamanoor Islam, which took place on Tuesday 11th April in Wager Street, E3.
Syed, a 20 year old who had previously studied business at Tower Hamlets College, was with a couple of friends in Wager Street on Tuesday afternoon when some other young men came up and began arguing with them – and Syed was beaten with a baseball bat and then stabbed.
Syed lived nearby, and members of his family rushed to the scene, as did others from the local community – who all tried to help. At the forefront was his mother, Hafsa Chowdhury, who saw her son stabbed and cradled him as others tried to help Syed with First Aid. Police and the ambulance service arrived just before 5pm. Syed was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead just after 17.30.
The news has shocked the local community, with residents and people who work in the area saying that Wager Street was a quiet area without any obvious tensions. Syed’s father, Syed Abdul Makit, called for stronger action to stop people carrying knives. He said that his son, the oldest of his four children, was a quiet boy who had no history of being in trouble and who came to be stabbed because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
One 18 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. The police kept the area sealed off on Wednesday while they searched for any forensic evidence. They are keeping an open mind about a possible motive.
Detective Chief Inspector Tony Lynes of the Metropolitan Police Homicide and Major Crime Command is leading the investigation. He said, “We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at that time and might have seen what happened or who has any information about the circumstances.”
•Anyone who can help is asked to contact the incident room on 020-8721 4868. Alternatively, you can speak anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800-555 111.
