US President Donald Trump and other key politicians were swiftly evacuated by security staff from the White House Correspondents’ Annual Dinner as a noise rang out which may have been gunshots.
Whether the noise was a shooting or another loud noise has been disputed. However, White House staff have been saying that a shooter has been apprehended.
Some 2,000 people are estimated to have been at the dinner. There was chaos in the room as the noise rang out, with guests diving under the tables.
It is understood that although Trump was removed from the room, together with his wife and other top politicians, he is still on the premises. Other guests have been locked into the room where the annual dinner was taking place.
Trump sent a message that the dinner should go on, although it was unclear whether he would return.
