US PRESIDENT Donald Trump met Andy Burnham while they were both at the United Nations in New York last week. They sat together for a few words with the press after their meeting.
It was then that Trump became confused over whom he was meeting. He mentioned the “tremendous patriotism in Britain”… before going off at a tangent and trying to find a name for the country of which Andy Burnham is Prime Minister.
“You call it United Kingdom, Britain; they call it sometimes England,” said Trump. “They go back to the old – it’s got more names than any other place in the world, right?”
That’s bad enough, but the Huffington Post reminds us that Trump made the same error while being interviewed by Piers Morgan in 2018. Trump said that the UK could be referred to as England or Great Britain. Morgan pointed out that this was not true. Trump’s reply was, “Right, yeah. You know I know, but a lot of people don’t know that. But you have lots of different names.”
That’s bad enough… but Trump repeated the error while addressing a rally in Pennsylvania, just a few weeks after the Morgan interview. “I have great respect for the UK. United Kingdom. Great respect. People call it Britain. They call it Great Britain. They used to call it England, different parts,” he said.
Journalist Mehdi Hasan commented, “It is as ever difficult to overstate Trump’s dumbness and ignorance.” For our part, we don’t know whether to be appalled or glad that the man with his fingers on the nuclear trigger may not, if he falls out with us, be able to find us.
