Most Council meetings are open to the public. Going along and seeing your councillors perform is a good way to keep an eye on them and learn about what’s going on. Meetings can move or be cancelled, so check your Council website before going to a meeting listed below.
Tower Hamlets
Monday 29th June, 6.30pm: General Purposes Committee
There’s some standard start-of-the-year items on this agenda – terms of reference and appointing a Vice Chair and all that stuff. Two items – the Local Authority Governor Applications and the Election Update Report – do not have any papers on the website. The papers are marked as “to follow”, which is very bad practice.
Tuesday, 30th June, 6.30pm: Licensing Sub-Committee
Two applications are on the agenda: Café Lavista in Brick Lane and The Original Crispy Cod in Watney Street both want to extend their opening hours to 2am, seven days a week.
Wednesday, 1st July, 5.30pm: Grants Determination (Cabinet) Sub-Committee
This is a very interesting agenda. Anyone who is part of a community group which receives funding from the Mayor’s Community Grants Programme should go along and listen to the proposed changes.
Thursday, 2nd July, 1pm: King George’s Field Charity Board
There is some start-of-the-year business. There is not much substantive business, save for a bit of an issues with some property.

Newham
Monday, 29th June, 6.30pm: Health & Wellbeing Board
Information given in this agenda suggests that the Board meets four times a year, It is not surprising, then, that the agenda for this meeting is very dense. There’s a focus on health in Newham in the general population and specifically in children – and what the Council and local NHS are doing about this (with a report on the finances of this joint work). It is hard to see how the Board can have a sensible discussion on all these documents – though they might have time to nod them through. This Board needs to get a grip and work out what it’s for.
Wednesday, 1st July, 10am: Licensing Sub-Committee
There’s only one application to consider. It comes from Butchers Road Newsagents. Daytime meetings are hard for residents to attend.

Hackney
Monday, 29th June, 2pm: Licensing Sub-Committee
Just one application to consider: for a premises licence in Bohemia Place.
Monday, 29th June, 6pm: Cabinet
What a time to hold a Cabinet! This is hardly convenient for local residents. There’s a dense agenda, starting with financial information and followed by some regeneration reports and the timetable for the Local Plan and, finally, appointment of school governors and Council representatives to external bodies. The Cabinet will then exclude the press and public while it discusses a property issue.
Friday, 3rd July, 6.30pm: Planning Sub-Committee
Your weekend starts here! There’s some start-of-the-year bits and then two applications: from Furrow Lane and from Orsman Road.

Barking & Dagenham
Tuesday, 30th June, 7pm: Pensions Committee
Quarterly monitoring and Fund Governance.
Wednesday, 1st July, 7pm: Audit and Risk Committee
This is a long agenda, full of technical documents.
Thursday, 2nd July, 10am: Community Safety Partnership
Hmph. The Partnership brings together several bodies and makes them work together to improve local safety across a range of issues. 10am is not a good time to get members of the public to attend. But it hardly matters, as there are no papers on the website, or even an agenda – just a not saying that the papers will be uploaded a week before the meeting. This is not good enough!
Thursday, 2nd July, 7pm: Licensing Sub-Committee
There’s just one item to consider: an application from Jay Food and Win in Broad Street.

Tuesday, 30th June, 10am: Children’s Commissioning Appointments sub-committee
The meeting is seeking to appoint an Assistant Director of Children’s Commissioning: the first item on the agenda is, therefore, to exclude the public! Don’t go!
Tuesday, 30th June, 10.30am: Licensing Sub-Committee
Item 3 on the agenda is the “Chairman’s Announcement”. A gender-specific reference: how quaint. The man will chair the Sub-Committee through the discussion of an application from Iceland in Farnham Road.
Tuesday, 30th June, 7pm: Audit Committee
The meeting starts with the Chairman’s announcements: there goes Reform, taking us back to the 1950s. The meeting has the usual list of complex financial documents.
Thursday, 2nd July, 10.30am: Stage 3 Children’s Complaint Review Panel Governance Committee
No papers have yet been uploaded. It is not clear if this is really a public meeting.
