A PALLET OF BRICKS fell from a crane in Burdett Road, Mile End, this morning – critically injuring a young woman who was passing by. Witnesses said that the pallet landed on her as she walked along the pavement.
The incident happened at around 9.30am this morning, outside the Bow Corner development at the junction between Burdett Road and St Paul’s Way. This is a new residential block of 19 flats, being developed by Higgins Homes on the site of a former petrol station, where prices are around the £500,000 mark.
The woman was taken to an East London hospital by ambulance, where her condition remains critical. Police have confirmed that her next of kin have been informed. There are reports that a second person was also injured, less seriously, and taken to hospital.
Nearby roads were closed to allow the rescue operation, involving several ambulances and the air ambulance, to take place – causing traffic tailbacks. The Health & Safety Executive is reported to be investigating the incident.
