Newham man admits he killed his own mother

THE DEATH of a woman pensioner who lived in St George’s Square, Newham is no longer a mystery. Her son, who lived with her, has admitted that he killed her.

Richard Clayton, 45, strangled his mother, Angela Clayton, on 17th February this year. He then phoned 999 and reported what he had done to the police. On 13th July, he appeared at the Old Bailey and pleaded guilty to murdering her.

Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke, who led the Metropolitan Police investigation, said, “Our thoughts are with Angela’s family and friends, who have lost a much-loved mother, grandmother and friend. While no outcome can undo their loss, we hope today’s conviction brings them some measure of closure.”

DCI Yorke said that the Metropolitan Police remain committed to tackling violence against women and girls and she encouraged anyone affected to seek help from the police or support services.

Angela Clayton’s family thanked the Metropolitan Police for supporting them and for preparing the case against Richard Clayton, which delivered the justice she deserved. They asked for privacy to allow them to grieve.

Richard Clayton will return to court for sentencing on 22nd September.
