Birmingham 2022 breaks records for women and para-sport

THERE WILL BE record numbers of sports for women and para sports at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022. This has become clear after the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) announced the new sports to be included in the next Games.

There are now 133 men’s medal events in the programme – and 135 for women. There are also seven mixed events. There will be up to 4,500 athletes competing across 19 sports.

This is more than last Games, because the 71 Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs) have voted to add Women’s Cricket, Beach Volleyball and Para Table Tennis to the programme – creating record opportunities.

Women’s T20 Cricket should fit in well, with eight teams competing at Birmingham’s Edgbaston stadium.

The Para Table Tennis will bring the number of para sports in the Games to eight.

Beach Volleyball made its debut at the 2018 Commonwealth Games – and is back by popular demand.

CGF President Dame Louise Martin said, “Today is an historic day for the Commonwealth Games and I am delighted that we can now confirm that Birmingham 2022 is set to have the largest ever female and para-sport programme in history […] We are passionate advocates of women’s sport and para-sport so I am thrilled we are able to make this special announcement today.”
