Criminal network sentenced to over 50 years

ELN: 19 drug dealers operating in Whitechapel E1, have been sentenced to 53 years in prison for drug trafficking offences. On 26th May 2011, the final defendants were sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court. 17 defendants pleaded guilty at earliest opportunity, three elected for trial and one defendant was acquitted.

The operation commenced in June 2010 after community concerns were raised about drug dealing and anti social behaviour in the Whitechapel area. The operation was jointly funded by Tower Hamlets Council and the MPS, supported by a specialist crime directorate, to target individuals involved in drug supply within the area.

On 22nd September 2010, over 350 Metropolitan Police Officers from Tower Hamlets, assisted by colleagues from the Territorial Support Group (TSG) and units from the Dogs section, executed search warrants at 18 addresses within Tower Hamlets from 5am. 15 drug dealers were arrested and officers recovered over £33,000 cash following searches of residential premises in and around the Whitechapel area. A further five arrests were made days later.

Detective Sergeant Steve Storey of Tower Hamlets Crime Squad said: “This was an organised drugs network that have prospered from drug dealing.
