Mosque stabbing suspect appears in court

DANIEL HORTON, 29, of no fixed abode appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court today – Saturday, 22nd February.

Horton was arrested at the Regent’s Park Mosque on Thursday, 20th February after an incident during which the muezzin Raafat Maglad, 70, was stabbed in the neck with a kitchen knife. The matter is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Central West Command Unit.

At the Court, Horton faced charges of Section 18 GBH and possession of a bladed article. The Court heard that Horton had attended the mosque for a number of years, and he and Mr Magland knew each other. He was remanded in custody and will next appear at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, 20th March.

Horton was also charged with two counts of breaching an unrelated restraining order. During his appearance at Westminster Magistrates Court he was sentenced to eight weeks in prison for that offence.

The Court heard that Mr Magland had suffered a 1.5cm wound to his neck, but fortunately the injury was not too serious and he was able to leave hospital after treatment. He was able to attend Friday prayers at the Mosque the day after the attack.
