Prison for Barking man after DV and Covid-19 threat

A SERIES OF violent actions in Barking led to Brandon Wallace being jailed last month. He had threatened a woman in an incident of domestic violence – and went on to spit at police trying to arrest him.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police East Area Command Unit were called out at around 11.45am on 20th April to an address in Barking. They arrested Brandon Wallace, 21, of no fixed address on suspicion of having made domestic threats to kill as well as committing criminal damage to property belonging to the woman he was threatening.

Wallace resisted arrest and spat at police – telling them that he had COVID-19.  He was then arrested on suspicion of assault on emergency workers. While he was in custody, Wallace admitted that he had not had a positive test for COVID-19 and nor did he have any symptoms.

Wallace was charged on the day of his arrest and appeared at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court the following day. He pleaded guilty to charges of affray (in respect of the threats he had made against the woman), criminal damage, assault on emergency workers and breach of Regulation 9(1)(b) Health Protection (Coronavirus restrictions) Regulations 2020.  He was sentenced to six months in prison.

Inspector Alexis Manley, of East Area Command Unit, issued a stern warning to anyone considering committing similar offences.  He said, “Thousands of dedicated officers are working to keep Londoners safe at this extraordinary time, and among our priorities is to tackle all forms of domestic offending. It says much about the attitude of this man that, in addition to targeting somebody close to him, he was also willing to make false claims about Covid 19 and to spit at officers.

“He has, at least, pleaded guilty to these offences. I hope he spends his period in prison to reflect on his behaviour, and that his prison sentence sends a message to others who are willing to commit domestic offences and to target police officers whose job it is to protect Londoners. Such offenders will be arrested and put before the courts, and a prison sentence is a likely outcome.”
